Ozonucleolysis
Doctor Kares Hospital is the first centre in India to perform Intradiscal Ozone Discectomy (Ozonucleolysis) as a safe and effective alternative to open surgical procedure for prolapsed disc.
Developed in Italy, over 80,000 patients have now been treated successfully using injection of medical ozone with a success rate of 80-90% and a near nil rate of procedure related complications. Chemonucleolysis using percutaneous injection of intradiscal enzyme (chymopapain) was popularized an alternative to surgery in many of cases with lumbar radiculopathy stemming from herniated lumbar intervertebral disc in the 1980s with a reported successful outcome of 82%. The procedure lost much of its flair owing to rare, though severe reported complications like anaphylaxis, transverse myelitis, paraplegia and subarachnoid haemorrhage. There has been a resurgence of interest in using percutaneous intradiscal techniques, substituting medical ozone oxygen mixture as a safe alternative injectate in the place of chymopapain. This least invasive, cost effective technique has all the benefits of chymopapain injection with none of its complications and has the potential of becoming the procedure of choice for many sufferers of sciatica and brachalgia who have failed to respond to conservative measures.
Ozone therapy, thanks to its good results, noninvasiveness and lack of major complications compared to other methods (microsurgery, endoscopic discectomy, percutaneous arthroscopic discectomy, conventional surgery etc) make this therapy the treatment of choice with the potential to change lives of countless sufferers of back and leg pain.
What is Ozone Discectomy (Ozonucleolysis)?
Injection of Ozone-Oxygen mixture into the disc is a new alternative method of treating patients suffering from back and leg pain (sciatica) coming from a disc prolapse.
How does it work?
When ozone-oxygen is injected into the disc, the prolapse shrinks and pressure on the nerve is reduced.
Injections also decrease painful swelling of the nerve that occurs with disc prolapse.
Is Ozone therapy safe?
Ozone injections have been found to be an extremely safe frm of treatment and are currently employedas the first treatment of choice for disc herniation in many countries. This treatment is by and large free from any side effect by the injection of ozone itself.
What are the steps involved?
We follow a Kumar Protocol that comprises of 4 - 6 injections of medical grade ozone oxygen mixture under digital C-Arm imaging in the intradiscal, pararadicular and intraforaminal areas of the prolapsed disc over a 2 - 3 week duration.
