Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is inflammation of the joints (junction of two bones – eg. knee) that causes pain and swelling. A patient with arthritis feels pain and stiffness with trouble moving. An untreated swollen joint can lead to permanent damage. Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease can be caused by ageing or repetitive injury and leads to damage of cartilage and bone. Arthritis may also be caused by the immune system attacking the body (auto immune disease) such as in Rheumatoid arthritis.
Joint Replacement
Joint Replacement is an orthopaedic surgery performed in which worn-away parts of a joint are replaced with artificial surfaces. These implants are expertly designed so that the surfaces facilitate movement of the joint. Joint Replacement surgery is also known as Arthroplasty, and the major indication for requiring it is advanced osteoarthritis with pain. Common joints that require this surgery include the hips, knees and shoulder. Doctor Kares has a world class team of Joint Replacement specialists who have results equalling the best in the world.
Sports Injury
The most common sports injuries include sprains and strains, knee injuries, fractures and dislocations, Achilles tendon injuries, swollen muscles and shin bone pain. Every sportsman should know that the immediate treatment for a sports injury is RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation). Sprains and strains should improve over 48 hours with RICE, but other injuries may need further treatment. At Doctor Kares, our Joint Services team of orthopaedic surgeons performs world class arthroscopy (eg. for ACL repair) and open surgeries including joint replacements when required.
Knee Pain
The knee is both complexly designed and an active weight-bearing joint. These qualities make it a very commonly injured joint. The ligaments of the knee (MCL, ACL, and others) can be injured with trauma. When injured, they may be painful at rest as well as warm and swollen. A meniscus acts as a shock absorber to the knee. It is made of cartilage and can be easily torn with sharp, rapid motions. The incidence of these tears increases with aging and degenerative conditions such as arthritis. A popping sensation may accompany certain knee movements in patients with meniscal tears.
Tendinitis is inflammation of a knee tendon that can be caused by a strain such as jumping. Local injections of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents may be effective in this condition. At Doctor Kares, the diagnosis of knee pain begins with a carefully conducted clinical examination. Imaging can localize structural defects. Keeping in mind what best suits a patient's age and activity level, treatment ranges from medical management and physiotherapy, injections, arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery, to open joint replacements if needed.
Frozen Shoulder
A frozen shoulder is a stiff shoulder with low mobility and high pain. It usually happens to patients between 40 and 60 years. A process that thickens the shoulder joint capsule could cause a frozen shoulder. 10 to 20% of patients with diabetes may experience a frozen shoulder. It is also associated with thyroid disease, Parkinson's disease and cardiac disease.
Tennis/Golfer's Elbow
Nowadays excessive computer use is more likely to cause tennis elbow than playing tennis. Tennis elbow is a condition that happens with the outside of the elbow becomes painful and tender. Golfer's elbow is similar, but affects the inside of the elbow. These conditions are sometimes caused by an injury. Physiotherapy and local injections are some ways that Doctor Kares treats these nagging conditions.
